Here's Looking At The Ups and Downs of Jewish American immigrants Compared to my Father's Experience

 Nadene Goldfoot

Dad starting life off as a boxer and a baseball player.

My father's DNA shows us that his Y haplogroup is of QBZ67 a Q line of Jewish men.  Moses/Morris/Maurice Goldfoot was born in Portland, Oregon on July 1, 1908 to Nathan Abraham Goldfoot of Telsiai, Lithuania and Zlata Goldfoot nee Jermulowske of Lazdijai, Suwalki, Lithuania/Poland.

I'm going to take a look at two other Jewish men born at about the same time in Chicago and see what advantages they had in life.

Dad attended Failing Grade School and Commerce High School, having to quit after his junior year to work and help support his family, fatherless since 1912 when Nathan was killed in his horse and wagon accident.  Dad became a kosher butcher which led to having his own business of Lincoln Wholesale Meats to designing, owning and running his own business called Silver Falls Meat Packing Co. in Portland.  He died on July 23, 1967 at age 59.  He had a brother, Charlie, who moved to Grand Coulee, Washington with his wife and son sometime in the late 30s..  Portland only had the two families of Goldfoot left, Morris's mother with his sisters and his own new family.

Portland's city college wasn't built until the 1950s as Portland State U. " We first opened in 1946 as the Vanport Extension Center for 220 students in Vanport, a city built to house wartime shipyard workers. After surviving a devastating flood in 1948, we moved three times before finding our permanent home in 1952 in the heart of downtown Portland, Oregon."  I was the first to enter it from our family in 1956.  I was able to take my 2 babes to Fruit and Flower Nursery School a few blocks away while I attended classes.   My dad had worked at the shipyards during WWII, keeping his own business going and working at his 2nd job at the shipyards as a boss of crew.

Dad's DNA shows that we match such people as the Rubensteins and the Oppenheim/Oppenheimers. They are all in the group of FTDNA of Halpern & Matches.

University of Chicago. The University of Chicago opened in 1892 under the auspices of the American Baptist Education Society. Baptist oil magnate John D. Rockefeller provided the initial funding for the nonsectarian, coeducational institution modeled on the graduate research universities of Germany.

Jews arrived in Chicago immediately after its 1833 incorporation.  The Ashkenazi were the first Jewish group settling in Chicago. In the late 1830s and early 1840s a group of German Jews came to Chicago. Most of them were from Bavaria.  On Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) 1845 the first Jewish religious service in Chicago was held. Many Jews peddled items on streets. They later opened small stores, which were the basis of several companies. In this time the Jewish community was constantly growing, and when the American Civil War began, the community itself recruited a company of 100 Jews to join the 82nd Regiment of Illinois Volunteers.

Originally the Jews lived in the Downtown area, but this changed after the Great Chicago Fire occurred in 1871. Many moved to lakeside communities such as Hyde ParkKenwood, and South Shore.

By 1930, I find a Boris B. Rubenstein attending U. of Chicago and living in the dormitory on April 30, 1930 at the age of 22.  He was also born in 1908 but in Massachusetts.  His father was from Germany and mother was from Russia.  All eastern European countries were then labeled as Russia.  He was not working.  I found that Boris had become a doctor,  an Endocrinologist and died at age 67 in Chicago, Illinois in 1975.  CHICAGO, Jan. 1 (AP)—Dr. Boris B. Rubenstein, an endocrinologist noted for research on the relationship between ovarian hormones and human... I had found him on the 1940 census in Cleveland, Ohio, married to Dorothy with a daughter, and he was a doctor, a medical researcher.

Then I found a Paul Rubenstein, my 4th cousin, living  near Portland, not too far from me.  We got together several times. That was a fantastic find;  We found that we had many of the same interests, such as our ancient history.  We had some weird coincidences, too, like having Hillsboro, Oregon as part of our history.

In FTDNA, I have 81 Rubenstein matches including Paul.  Some are 3rd to 5th cousins, most are all 4th cousins.

Joseph Allen Hynek  (1910-1986) whose father was from Czechoslovakia.  J. Allen Hynek studied astronomy at the University of Chicago before joining the faculty at Ohio State University. He died at age 76.

Both men were in the same dormitory at the same time as Joseph Allen Hynek who became a famous astronomer who is best known  for investigations of unidentified flying objects and efforts to promote "ufology" as a legitimate scientific pursuit..No, I have no DNA connection to any Hynek.

In the same dormitory I also found Alexander Oppenheim, age 27, born in England in 1903.  Both his parents were from "Russia."  He was not working, either.

Oppenheim was born on 4 February 1903 in Salford, England to an immigrant family from Lithuania. His first language was Yiddish. He grew up in Manchester and attended Manchester Grammar School, where he was recognised as a mathematical prodigy. His teachers considered him too young to attend university and delayed his entrance to scholarship competitions until 1921, when he received a scholarship to Balliol CollegeOxford. In each of his three undergraduate years at the University of Oxford, Oppenheim was the Oxford University mathematical scholar. He also captained the university chess team.He graduated with first-class honours in 1924 and was the senior mathematical scholar in 1926.

He was awarded a Commonwealth Fellowship to study at Princeton University and the University of Chicago. He completed a PhD at the University of Chicago in 1930 under the supervision L.E. Dickson with a thesis titled Minima of Indefinite Quadratic Quaternary Forms. Oppenheim received a second doctorate, a DSc, from the University of Oxford in 1954 for his academic work later in his career.

Sir Alexander Oppenheim(4 February 1903 – 13 December 1997) was a British mathematician and university administrator. In Diophantine approximation and the theory of quadratic forms, he proposed the Oppenheim conjecture. He was a professor of mathematics at the University of Malaya, the University of Singapore, and its predecessors. During the Second World War, he was a prisoner of war in the Changi Camp and helped organized a "POW University". After the war, he served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malaya before holding two professorships in Ghana and Nigeria. He died at age 94 despite being held in a prisoner of war camp.

I personally match 4 male Oppenheims that are all my 4th to remote cousins, and a female who is 3rd to 5th cousin and another female that is 4th cousin.  They are all on FTDNA. In all, I have 70 Oppenheim and Oppenheimers in FTDNA.

OPPENHEIM, town in Germany. Jews are first mentioned there in the tax register of 1241, according to which they were obliged to pay the emperor an annual tax of 15 marks. The Jews of the town, legally the property of the emperor, were placed under the protection of the officers in charge of the local fortress, to whom they paid their taxes. They also paid a house tax to the archbishop of Mainz. The burden of their taxes appears to have caused several Jews of Oppenheim to join the group that fled from the Rhineland and, under the leadership of *Meir b. Baruch of Rothenburg, attempted to emigrate to Ereẓ Israel (1285). At the end of July 1349, during the persecutions that followed the *Black Death, most of the Jews of Oppenheim were murdered, while others chose martyrdom (*kiddush ha-Shem) and burned themselves to death in order to escape forced conversion at the hands of the mob.

Some time later the community was reestablished. After 1400 the right of residence was made renewable at the end of every six years, and the amount of taxes to be paid was fixed. In 1422 a plot by two Christians to kill the Jews of the town was frustrated by the municipal council. Certain protection fees and "gifts" that the Jews of Oppenheim were compelled to pay weighed upon them so heavily that despite the additional support of such communities as Worms, Mainz, and Frankfurt, Oppenheim Jewry could not meet their payments and were therefore penalized (1444). In 1456, R. Seligmann Bing (or R. Seligmann Oppenheim) attempted to establish a union of the communities of the Upper Rhine, but because of community opposition and that of R. Israel Isserlein (c. 1390–1460), the project was abandoned.

The community suffered during the wars of Louis XIV, and by 1674 only three families remained in the town. By 1722 the number had grown to eight. Many Oppenheim Jews settled in Frankfurt and other south German cities, where they were known as "Oppenheim" or "Oppenheimer," and the name became widespread. The community numbered 20 families in 1807; 257 in 1872; 189 in 1880; and 56 in 1933. Of the 17 Jews who remained during World War II, 16 were deported. In 1970 no Jews lived in Oppenheim.

There were poor Jews and wealthy Jews who came to the USA who made an impact, even though we are only 0.02% of the population. Though our grandfather, Nathan died in his 40s, he left 4 children who produced 9 grandchildren, of which 2 are PhDs, 1 with a Master's degree and all were college graduates. with the great grandchildren doing well, too.

Connecting to Wertheimer and Oppenheimer Through Life in Germany

Nadene Goldfoot
Oppenheim, Germany
"OPPENHEIM  is a town in  the Mainz-Bingen district of Rhineland- PalatinateGermany.

The town is a well-known wine center, being the home of the German Winegrowing Museum, and is particularly known for the wines from the Oppenheimer Krötenbrunnen vineyards.  However, to Jews of today, it is known for other reasons.  We have to remember our history of being forced to become moneylenders because no other profession was allowed by the countries we were living in.  It was also a profession that Jews excelled in from experience on the Silk Road trading in the Orient.  Wherever Jews lived, whether it was in Europe or the Middle East where they were 2nd class citizens called dhimmis, they had to pay more taxes than the native population because they were Jews.  For this reason alone they had to be good at handling their own money so they could live.

*Rudolf of Hapsburg and other kings gave letters of credit to various noblemen which were to be defrayed from the taxes paid by the Jews of Oppenheim; at times, they also leased these taxes. The burden of their taxes appears to have caused several Jews of Oppenheim to join the group that fled from the Rhineland and, under the leadership of *Meir b. Baruch of Rothenburg, attempted to emigrate to Eretz Israel (1285). At the end of July 1349, during the persecutions that followed the *Black Death, most of the Jews of Oppenheim were murdered, while others chose martyrdom (*kiddush ha-Shem) and burned themselves to death in order to escape forced conversion at the hands of the mob. Among the martyrs was the rabbi Joel ha-Kohen.

Rabbi Samson Wertheimer born in 1658 in Worms, Germany at a time when it was part of the Holy Roman Empire and died in 1724 in Vienna, Austria after being a court financier.  His uncle was Samuel Oppenheimer.  The bank they both worked in that Samuel had established was in Vienna.   Samson and his son had lent large sums of money to the emperor.  In 1719 he became the Chief Rabbi of Hungary and also of Moravia.  He also was the rabbi of Eisenstadt, Austria where Joseph Haydn lived.

His uncle, Samuel Oppenheimer, was born in 1630 and died in 1703.  He was a philanthropist and Court Jew.  Jews had been expulsed from Vienna in 1670 , but he was the first Jew to resettle after that.  He had become Leopold I's agent and financier, helping to finance his wars with the Turks and the War of the Spanish Succession.  Another nephew of Samuel Oppenheimer was David Oppenheim/Oppenheimer born 1664 also born in Worms, Germany and had become a Rabbi.  He served as rabbi in Nikolsburg, and from 1702, in Prague.  He had built a library of books that was very valuable, and because of the censorship in Prague, had to keep them in Hanover, Germany.  Much later in 1829 they were transferred to the Bodleian Library Oxford serving as the basis of its Hebrew section.

The ridiculous happened in 1697.  This was when he was accused of conspiring to murder  his nephew, who others saw as his rival, Rabbi Samson Wertheimer.  He was even put into prison until he was vindicated.  Samuel Openheimer was known to be a man who supported the poor liberally, Jewish scholars, and even Judah Hasid's movement to settle in Palestine-the return to Israel.  So evidently Zionism started then.

For people studying their genealogy, I am one who has found that my family shares a DNA connection that leads to Rabbi Wertheimer.  In fact, I was told that two paths lead to him.  He in turn kept a genealogy that led him to RASHI, the famous biblical commentator whose comments are found in most all Jewish prayer books.  Rashi had his genealogy that led him to King David.   The family genealogy of Wertheimer:  a line of it is below:
at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~prohel/names/wertheimer/wertheimer.html.

Rabbi Samson WERTHEIM (WERTHEIMER) Born: Jan 17, 1658 Died: Aug 6, 1724 in Vienna. Landesrabbiner + Veronica "Frumet" (see BRILIN family)Born: Mar 15, 1658/9 Died: Apr 24, 1715/18 in Vienna Father: rabbi Isaak Brilin (Brüll) (Worms? - 3/17/1678 Mannheim bur. Worms, Germany) MotherSorle (Sarlan, Sara, Serle) Oppenheim/er (Wolf(Worms, Germany - 3/3/1673 Worms or Mannheim, Germany)

By the marriages of his children,  Wertheimer became connected with the most prominent families of Austria and Germany. His stepson,  Isaac Nathan Oppenheimer,  married a daughter of the wealthy purveyor Pösing; his eldest son, Wolf, married a daughter of Emanuel Oppenheimer.

Wertheimer's first son was Wolf Wertheimer who suffered a reversal of his father's fortune. "Samson's second son, Löb, married a daughter of Issachar ha-Levi Bermann of Halberstadt, a relative of Leffman Behrenscourt Jew of Hanover; thus the three great "shetadlanin" were closely connected. Samson's sons-in-law were: R. Moses Kann of Frankfurt-on-the-Main; Issacbar Berush Eskeles, father of the Vienna banker Bernhard Eskeles; Joseph, son of R. David Oppenheimer; and Seligmann Berend Kohn, called Solomon of Hamburg. His youngest son, Joseph Josel (b. 1718), married a daughter of his stepbrother Wolf. Joseph died in Vienna (1761), where he was reportedly greatly esteemed for his charity and Talmudic learning.

Joseph Ben Issachar Susskind Oppenheimer was born in 1698.  He was known as Joseph Suss or Jud Suss.  He was a financier.  This is because Jews were kept out of most all other professions, and since in Christianity, gentiles were not allowed to lend money, it became the undesirable but needy profession that was open to Jews.   It was Carl Alexander of Wurttemberg who appointed Joseph as his finance minister in 1732.  Joseph endeavored to consolidate the duchy's finances and free its ruler from dependence on grant from the estates.  His modern financial methods aroused much opposition.  After the death of the duke in 1737, he was accused of embezzling state finances and was hung in Stuttgart, supposedly for having sexual relations with Christian women.  He refused to save his life by accepting baptism.

I wonder if President Trump ever read about him at his Wharton School of Finance in Pennsylvania because Oppenheimer's career, ahead of its time, is the subject of many books.  A novel was even written about him by Lion Feuchtwanger, titled  JEW SUSS, written in German.

The community numbered 20 families in 1807; 257 in 1872; 189 in 1880; and 56 in 1933. Of the 17 Jews who remained during World War II, 16 were deported. In 1970 no Jews lived in Oppenheim. A memorial plaque commemorates the destroyed synagogue and the Oppenheim Jews who were victims of the Holocaust. The municipality organized two meetings of "Oppenheims" and "Oppenheimers" in 2000 and 2003."

Direct Connections to Rabbi Samson Wertheimer From Family Tree

Rabbi Samuel Oppenheimer,
the uncle
Rabbi Samson Wertheimer

Rabbi Samson Wertheimer b: in Worms, Germany 1658-died in 1724, joined the bank of his uncle Oppenheimer in Vienna in 1684; became a court banker with him;; established a fund to help paupers in Palestine which existed until 1914:  Uncle  Samuel Oppenheimer b: 1630-d: 1703.  Oppenheimer was the first Jew to settle in Vienna after the 1670 expulsion probably because he was Germany's
Emperor Leopold I 1640-1705 of Germany
Emperor Leopold I's agent and financier and had helped to finance his wars with the Turks and the War of the Spanish Succession.

In 1697, Oppenheimer was accused of the unthinkable;  conspiring to murder his rival, Uncle Samson Wertheimer, so he was imprisoned until vindicated.  He was a man who liberally supported the poor Jewish scholars, and also Judah Hasid's movement to settle in Palestine.

We have Oppenheim on our tree, but also know that we are connected to Rabbi Samson Wertheimer by DNA testing using triangulation of other matches.  Our surname in Telsiai, Lithuania was Goldfus.

On Family Tree DNA's familyfinder test (autosomal) , I found I share segments from our 23 chromosomes with: Oppenheim on our tree shown above but  have no Wertheimers  on my tree as yet.

Familyfinder test:  that I am connected to 3 Oppenheims and one Oppenheimer.
.....   that I am connected to 4 Wertheimers
Familyfinder Test of my brother: 1 Oppenheim and 1 Oppenheimer, different from my matches
..... of my brother:  1 Wertheimer- I match and 1 Wertheimer I don't match.
Familyfinder Test of our 1st cousin-daughter of our father's sister:  4 Oppenheim-(2 matching mine, 1 matching my brother's, and 1 Oppenheimer not matching ours).
.....of my 1st cousin:  6 Wertheimers-(1 I match, same 2 that David matches,)

There was a Rabbi David Oppenheim (or Oppenheimer) b: 1664 d: 1736, nephew of Samuel Oppenheimer.
He was born in Worms, Germany and served as rabbi in Nikelsburg, and from 1702, in Prague.  He built up a library of books  and expended enormous sums on their acquisition, but, because of the censorship in Prague, kept them in Hanover, Germany.  The Bodleian Library Oxford purchased his collection in 1829, and it served as the basis of its Hebrew sections.

There are many descendants of these Oppenheims, Oppenheimers and Wertheimers.  One way to check if they are related is through their Y haplogroup (male line).

I found some of our Oppenheim/Oppenheimers' Y haplogroups were : J, or R's
Some of the Wertheimers were J or E's.  Not all had been tested.

Rothschild Banking Family: Part of Our Court Jews of Vienna-Connection to Oppenheimer

Nadene Goldfoot

Through the familyfinder test at Family Tree DNA, I find that I am connected to Rothschild by DNA.  Out of 5 matches, 2 are 4th cousins and the other 3 are 5th cousins.  One 4th cousin listed Oppenheimer as his connection and I am also connected to Oppenheimer.     Rothschild would be among the court Jews of Vienna.

                                       Our Rothschild Connections

My brother matches with 2  Rothschilds, 1 4th  cousin and 1 5th cousin
My son matches with 1 Rothschild that I match, also as a 5th cousin.
My paternal cousin matches with 3 Rothschilds, 1 2nd cousin and 2 4th cousins.  .
Her nephew matches with 3 Rothschilds
My son's wife's brother matches 5 Oppenheim but no Rothschild.  I match 3 Oppenheim , all as 5th cousins.  This daughter-in-law's brother matches the same Oppenheims that match me but 1 is a 4th and 2 are 5th cousin.  Then he matches 2 more; a 4th and a 5th.  One that had matched me as a 5th matched him as a 4th.

Baron Mayer Amschel Rothschild

The Rothschild Banking family  is a family of financier and philathropists taking their name from a house at the sign of the "red shield" at Frankfort-on-Main, where its family were founded by Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1743-1812), who died at age 69 in Frankfort,  on wikipedia and the encyclopedia as below, originally a dealer in antique coins, who became financial agent to the landgrave of Hesse-Cassel during the French Revolutionary wars.  He had 5 sons who established themselves in different European centers.  The many branches of the House of Rothschild are dealt with individually in entries.  Many have omitted the common title of baron and the suffixes "de" and "von."

Mayer Amschel Rothschild was born in 1744 in the ghetto in Frankfurt. At the age of 13, he went to Hanover to serve an apprenticeship with the bank of Simon Wolf Oppenheimer. At the age of 19, he returned to Frankfurt. There he joined his brother Calmann's money-changing business. He became a dealer in rare coins and won the patronage of Wilhelm IX of Hesse, gaining the title of "court factor". Rothschild's coin business expanded through the provision of banking services to Wilhelm IX. His bank became one of the biggest in Frankfurt.

The family line started with Mayer Amschel Rothschild who married Guttle Schnapper (1753–1849), the daughter of Wolf Salomon Schnapper, on 29 August 1770.  "He was a German banker and the founder of the Rothschild banking dynasty, which is believed to have become the wealthiest family in human history. Referred to as the "founding father of international finance," Rothschild was ranked seventh on the Forbes magazine list of "The Twenty Most Influential Businessmen of All Time" in 2005.

  • Schönche Jeannette Rothschild (1771–1859), married Benedikt Moses Worms (1769–1824)

  •  The first Zionist pioneers in Palestine appealed to Edmond in the early 1880's at the time of the 1st Aliyah from Russia and he wanted to save them from financial collapse.  He supported Palestinian colonization and took under his protection all the new settlements which would have had to be liquidated had it not been for his aid.  What he did was send agricultural experts and officials who didn't always agree with the settlers.  Many of the failure were caused by these very officials, but they educated the new agricultural population of Palestine.

Salomon Mayer Rothschild (1774-1855)  lived in Vienna from 1816 and developed the Austrian branch of the firm, with his attention on the industrial development and railroad construction.  His line was followed by:
Anselm Rothschild (1803-1874)
Albert Solomon Rothschild (1844-1892).  His sons were held for ransom by the Nazis after their seizure of Vienna in 1938 when the firm was ended, existing no more.

"Salomon Mayer von Rothschild (September 9, 1774 – July 28, 1855) was the 2nd son but 3rd child  of Mayer Amschel Rothschild,  a German-born banker in the Austrian Empire and the founder of the Austrian branch of the prominent Mayer Amschel Rothschild family.
He was born at Frankfurt-am-Main  of Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1744–1812) and Gutlé Schnapper (1753–1849) was his mother.   In 1800, he married Caroline Stern (1782–1854). They had the following children:
  1. Anselm Salomon  Rothschild (1803–1874)
  2. Betty Salomon  Rothschild (1805–1886) - married her uncle,  James Mayer de Rothschild in 1824.  This is not unheard of.  Abraham had also married his niece, Sarah.

"Five lines of the Austrian branch of the family were elevated into the Austrian nobility, being given hereditary baronies of the Habsburg Empire by Emperor Francis II in 1816. The British branch of the family was elevated into the British nobility by Queen Victoria.

Amschel Rothschild, (1773-1855), oldest son of Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1743-1812 ,  had remained in Frankfort and was active there in the Jewish communal life.  His nephews from Naples, Mayer Karl Rothschild (1820-1886)  and Wilhelm Carl  Rothschild (1828-1901), succeeded him as head of the parent house, which closed down when Wilhelm died.  Wilhelm was strictly Orthodox.  "The Rothschild sons often included their fathers' names in their own, as we see from the example of Carl Meyer's sons, Meyer Carl and Wilhelm Carl, both of whom took over the Frankfurt branch when their Uncle Amschel left no sons.
